Madonna and Child

3rd quarter 15th c. | Luca della Robbia

Sentimental depictions of the Madonna for private devotion enjoyed great popularity in 15th century Florence. For the leading families, renowned artists such as Donatello created unique pieces in precious materials. The Della Robbia workshop, in contrast, specialized in cheaper terracotta works with intensely coloured glazes, which were highly prized and found wide distribution.
