The Madonna and Child with Saints Maurelius and George

circa 1604 | Carlo Bonone

The Madonna is accompanied by two saints with a special connection to Ferrara: Saint George, to whom the cathedral is dedicated, and Maurelius, the city’s first bishop. The latter turns his head to the beholder and points to the Madonna, as an invitation to join him in his adoration. A putto presents a city model. This work is an example of Bonone’s early style, which was strongly influenced by Correggio and the contemporary works of the Carraccis.
