Half-length Portrait of a Young Man in Red Robe

around 1500/05 | Lorenzo Lotto

The clear frame in terms of form and colour betrays the influence of Giovanni Bellini on his pupil’s early work. However, the remarkable curtain folds which fall in uneven lines and the play of light on the curtain give us something of an insight into the mysterious system of selfcreated laws which permeate Lotto’s later work.
