Wedding Feast of Grand Duke of Toscany

In 1589, the son of Cosimo I de’Medici married Christina of Lorraine, a member of the French royal family. To welcome the royal bride a number of sumptuous banquets and theatre performances were held in Florence and the city was adorned with decorations produced by various artists, among them Passignano. Placed at an oblique angle, the banqueting table leads us into a wide columned hall, which brings to mind Venetian banquets. The, for a Florentine, unusually painterly handling also references the art of Venice, with which Passignano became familiar during his long sojourn in the Serenissima.
