Moses before the Burning Thorn Bush

around 1615/17 | Domenico Fetti

God appears to Moses in a burning thorn bush and orders him to liberate the Jews from Egyptian bondage (Exodus 3:1−12). Fetti has chosen the moment in the biblical narrative in which the simple shepherd Moses is dazed by the unusual apparition. Slowly and awkwardly he follows God’s instruction to take off his sandals on this holy ground before he accepts the fateful task assigned to him.
