St. Jerome

St. Jerome retired to the wilderness to translate the Bible into Latin and do penance. His only companion was a lion, which never left his side after the saint had pulled a thorn from its paw. Dosso, who was court painter in Ferrara, had the clever idea of including his monogram in the picture by inserting a bone (Italian: “osso”) through the letter D.
