Mythological Wedding

dated post hoc 1609 | Joseph Heintz d. Ä.

Executed on panel, this virtuoso composition brilliantly illustrates the eclectic approach of the artist, who was familiar not only with the ancient and Renaissance works in Rudolf’s collections. Here, for example, Heintz created the central motifs of the composition by conflating two drawings by Giovanni Francesco Penni, a pupil of Raphael, that he presumably owned. The diverse visual sources help explain the somewhat recondite subject matter; Heintz had first become an avid student of Italian High-Renaissance art during his Italian sojourn (1584–1589).
