Portrait of a Woman in a Striped Dress
about 1530/35 | Giovanni Busi, gen. Cariani
The attribution of this portrait of a woman of powerful stature wavers between Palma Vecchio and Cariani. The broad monumentality of the figure, which fills the picture, and the type of face suggest Cariani as the author. However, the attention to detail, the differentiation of the fabric, the delicacy with which the face is depicted and the rather cool coloration seem foreign to Cariani’s style.
