Virgin Mary with Child and St. Anne

The depiction of St. Anne together with her daughter Mary and the Infant Jesus is also known in German as “Anna Selbdritt”. Caracciolo brings to life the group of holy characters as a family gathering. However, the gloomy colouring that typifies this painter and the craggy, bare architecture, which is only alleviated by the small “still life” with figs in the lower right corner, creates a strange, eerie contrast to the intimacy of the scene.
