Eucharist in Fruit Wreath

about 1655/60 | Jan Davidsz de Heem

Still lifes by de Heem are marked by astonishing realism and richness of form. The niche with the chalice and host is framed by grapes and sheaves of grain in a reference to the Eucharist. A dedicatory inscription to Archduke Leopold Wilhelm that is no longer legible elevated these gifts of Ceres and Bacchus (bread and wine) to symbols of the felicitous government of this regent of the Southern Netherlands.
