Portrait of a Goldsmith

around 1505/10 | Gerard David

Along with the development of the burgher portrait in the cities of the Netherlands in the 15th century, depictions of self-confident craftsmen also emerged, in which the viewer is presented with the subject’s artistic achievements. It has been assumed that with his portrait of the elegant gentleman in a fur-lined, brocaded cloak and fur cap, displaying precious rings, David may have portrayed his own father-in-law, the Bruges goldsmith, Jacob Cnoop the Younger.
