The Birth of Christ

about 1495 | Gerard David

Hugo van der Goes, the leading master of Netherlandish painting in the third quarter of the 15th century, created a (now lost) composition of the Birth of Christ as a nocturnal scene that was famous and admired during his lifetime. In his depiction the body of the Christ child was the main source of light, and the distribution of light and dark areas of the picture resulted from this unusual lighting situation.
