David and Abigail

around 1595/1598 | Frans Pourbus d. Ä.

The scene is taken from the First Book of Samuel in the Old Testament. Nabal was a rich landowner who refused to help David after he had fled from Saul. David decided to kill Nabal, but the latter’s wife Abigail successfully turned away the king’s wrath with an impassioned speech and gifts. Nabal died of natural causes a short time later, and David took Abigail as one of his wives.
