The Anointment of David

Veronese’s masterly command of the broadly laid-out, theatrical staging of the picture’s episode has its fullest effect in large-format paintings. The main figure is never alone at the centre – in this scene from the Old Testament it is the shepherd boy David who is anointed by the Prophet Samuel to be the future king of Israel – but many figures are spread out like a relief over the surface of the picture, flowing one into the next by means of colour and movement. At the sides, like theatrical scenery, atmospheric landscapes frame the main event.
