Deeds and Triumph of João de Castro: Landing in Dabhol and Destruction of the City

after 1557

The tapestry belongs to a series of ten describing incidents related to the conquest of parts of India by the Portuguese around 1545. The artist responsible for the design clearly received exact reports on the events, but probably was not in the city. Only certain details, such as the turban, camel, and palm, suggest the distant and “exotic” location of the action.
