Gabael Attends the Wedding Feast of Tobias and Sara

ca. 1540/50 | Bernaert van Orley

Large tapestries formed an important element of courtly display and were favourite princely gifts. The wedding scene in the story of Tobias in the Old Testament was an ideal subject for the respective occasions. Note in the background the sumptuous banquet so typical of the period and the sideboard on which precious ewers and vessels are displayed.
