Portrait of a Young Man

about 1515/20 | Bernaert van Orley

This portrait was formerly considered to be a self-portrait of the artist. A very similar head is also found in Orley’s Altarpiece of the Saints Thomas and Matthew (Inv. No. GG 992). However the clothing of the subject is an argument against a self-portrait: the expensive fur, the precious brocade, the wide beret, the fine glove that has been slit open to accommodate a large ring and, not least, the facial expression rather suggest a young patrician or nobleman.
