The Sacrifice of Isaac

around 1580/88 | Paolo Caliari, gen. Veronese

The Lord tests Abraham’s obedience: the latter must sacrifice his only legitimate son Isaac to God. At the last moment the Angel of the Lord commands him to leave off and sends a ram as the sacrificial animal instead. Cropped at the left, the right and the bottom, the picture was originally the companion picture to „Adam and Eve after the Expulsion from Paradise“ (Inv.-Nr. GG 1514).
