The Miracles of St. Francis Xavier, modello

about 1616/17 | Peter Paul Rubens

Like the modello for The Miracles of St. Ignatius of Loyola (Inv. No. GG 530) this sketch is from a design phase that already included all the important details for the monumental altarpiece. The brushwork here, however, is marked by much greater freedom and motion than are found in the finished painting, to which the painters in Rubens’s studio made substantial contributions. The modello expresses the artistic temperament of the master with great immediacy.
