The Calydonian Boar Hunt

1617/28 (?) | Peter Paul Rubens

At the harvest festival, King Oeneus had neglected to make the sacrifice that was due to Artemis, the goddess of hunting. As a punishment she sent a ferocious boar to ravage the lands of Calydon. The king’s son, Meleager, finally slew the animal with the help of Atalante and her companions. Jan Wildens painted the landscape and Frans Snyders the animals. Van Dyck extended the picture on all four sides.
