Spring

ca. 1600 | Niederländisch

The painting shows Mars, the god of war, as the personification of the month of March. He is surrounded by numerous objects to help him while away the time: musical instruments, games and sporting equipment, books and weapons. Behind him a group of courtiers is having fun in the garden of a palace. Life at a princely court followed well-defined rules just like games, music and dance. The collections housed in a Kunstkammer were part of this world and its order.
