Porträtkopf eines Knaben

Mitte 3. Jh. n. Chr.

One half of the head of this portrait of a pensive boy with short straight hair has survived. Presumably originally meant to be inserted into a bust or statue, it was turned into a relief and marked with a cross on the cheek at some later date. Its condition suggests that this happened in antiquity: in the late 3rd century a damaged Julian-Claudian portrait of a child was adapted and recycled as a relief.
