Nowadays the painter is also well known as an outstanding landscape painter in the tradition of Patinier. To the right he depicts the so-called cornfield legend: Mary has requested a peasant, should he be asked by Herod’s soldiers about the fugitives, to tell them he saw them go past at the time that the harvest was sown. By a miracle the grain grows overnight so that when the persecutors pass the very place the next day and see the mature wheat, they abandon the chase.
