Princess Isabella of Bourbon-Parma (1741-1763), wife of Emperor Joseph II

1758 datiert | Jean Marc Nattier d.J.

In the tradition of French rococo painting, Nattier portrays the attractive and erudite sixteen-year-old princess in a landscape setting: the handling of her face and sumptuous clothes are exquisite. The decorative ribbon around her neck was made fashionable by Madame de Pompadour. Nattier executed the portrait two years before Isabella, a granddaughter of Louis XV of France, married Archduke (later Emperor) Joseph II, cementing the new alliance between France and Austria.
