Helmhaube

1. Hälfte 16. Jahrhundert

Padded hoods like this one were used for the joust of peace (Stechen). The quilting on the head, face, nape and neck portions of the cap prevented chafing against the hard metal of the helmet and made it more comfortable to wear while also offering protection against dangerous injuries. In particular, the stronger padding in the area covering the crown and top of the head helped to cushion the impact of any direct lance blows. Quilted caps were individually fashioned by court tailors, silk embroiderers or upholsterers as part of a knight’s jousting armour.
