Madonna with Child and Saints

The dense composition of half-length figures is typical for Titian’s narrative style in the 1520’s. Similar to the compositional format of an “Adoration of the Kings”, Mary with the child kicking on her lap is moved from the centre to the left to make room for the jostling saints, the ancient father of the church Hieronymus, Stephen and Maurice. A second version of the picture exists which today can be found in the Museé du Louvre, Paris.
