Nymph and Shepherd
around 1570/75 | Tiziano Vecellio, gen. Tizian
Opinion is divided on the painting’s subject, which has variously been interpreted as “Dionysus and Ariadne” and “Paris and Oenone”. More convincing is an interpretation that sees a connection with pastoral themes and poetry, with their references to the disappointed longing of the herdsman poet for the woman who remains beyond his reach. The shepherd’s inner turmoil finds expression in the restless sky. The open brushwork of Titian’s late style anticipates the insights of the Impressionists.
