The Deposition

The painting is considered a replica of a lost deposition sent by Titian to the Spanish court of Philipp II in 1557. From the contemporaneous correspondence we know that the lost painting represented a deposition of Christ with five figures (no entire figures) in a small format. Although executed by Titian’s workshop it is of outstanding quality and features a number of interesting deviations from other versions (Madrid, Prado) painted by the master himself.
