Der Riese Anton Frank (Franck) mit Zwerg Thomele
Ende 16. Jahrhundert (nach 1583) | Deutsch
The double portrait depicts two »wonders of nature« in life size: Anton Frank [also Franck] (†1596) came from Geldern (Lower Rhine). With his massive height of c.2.40 m, he was considered the tallest person of the time. His skeleton has been preserved until today in the Museum Anatomicum in Marburg. Innsbruck court dwarf Thomele was probably the one that jumped out of a pie at the wedding of William of Bavaria V to Renata of Lorraine in 1568. As in the description of this event, he measures c.65 cm also on the painting and thus only reaches up to the giant's knees.
