The Entombment

The Entombment and Resurrection (Inv. No. GG 6796) are from the predella (base) of the large winged altar at the Abbey of St. Florian in Upper Austria, which is Altdorfer’s principal work. While the other panels remained in St. Florian, these two, which complete the cycle of the Passion, came to the KHM. The painter created spatial depth by juxtaposing different scales: the largeformat figures of Mary and John in the foreground contrast with the small figures placing Christ in the open tomb in the middle ground.
