Portrait of a Guild Squire

Several years ago this picture was identified as the portrait of a “Fool” by Frans Floris mentioned in the inventory of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm’s collection. In fact, the portrait is of a messenger (or squire) of the rederijkerskamer (dramatic society) De Olijftak. He is wearing a chain with silver badges bearing the names and coats of arms of various prinsen (the leading members of the society). Because the dates on the badges range between 1555 and 1563, the portrait may have been painted in the final years of Floris’s life.
