Christ Carrying the Cross

around 1510/15 (?) | Bernardino Luini

Old Dutch Naturalism and “Leonardian” idealism are combined in this work to produce an impressive icon of suffering. The brutal presence of the oversized crown of thorns, the thick rope around the Saviour‘s neck and the heavy cross contrast with the noble, delicately painted, almost translucentlooking face. Although Christ is in the centre of the picture, the path of the Calvary is indicated by the cross, the arm and above all His look.
