Portrait of Ottaviano Grimani

The nobleman Ottaviano Grimani commissioned this threequarter-length portrait to commemorate the founding of the Compagnia della Calza dei Sempiterni (1541). Sumptuously dressed in the colours of his Compagnia, he has placed his right hand on a book that may be the statutes of the Sempiterni (Always-eternals). Compagnie were associations of young noblemen charged with organizing lavish festivities. Reflecting his Lombard love of verisimilitude, Licinio faithfully documents the sitter’s features and clothes, and includes the sitter’s name and age, the artist’s signature and the date the painting was produced.
