St. Hieronymus

after 1525 | Bernardino Luini

Without cardinal’s robes, the church father is depicted in penitence before the crucifix with the instruments of self-inflicted pain, the stone and the whip. He is kneeling in rugged, barren mountainous landscape which signifies untamed wilderness, contrasting with the charming scenery in the background to the right which shows clear signs of human habitation. A river separates the two worlds. Luini follows here an iconographic tradition of Hieronymus depictions which formed in the 15th century and spread throughout all Italy.
