Cardinal-Infant Ferdinand
about 1634/35 | Jan van den Hoecke
The painting originally decorated the Ferdinand Arch, erected to honour the cardinal-infante on his triumphal entry into Antwerp in 1635 (cf. Inv. No. GG 697). Ferdinand, who was the younger brother of King Philip IV of Spain, became arch bishop of Toledo and cardinal in 1619. His real talent, however, was in military affairs. As commander of the Spanish forces, he became involved in the Thirty Years’ War, winning the Battle of Nördlingen for the Catholic side.
