Adoration of the Kings

around 1580/88 | Paolo Caliari, gen. Veronese

In his late period, Veronese’s colouring darkens, with landscapes in green and brown tones, probably under the influence of Veronese’s contemporaries Tintoretto and the Bassani, playing a major role. These tendencies can even be observed in the case of a theme such as the Adoration of the Three Holy Kings which traditionally contained strong colours; they lend a melancholy feel to the solemn meeting of the Magi with the Holy Child.
