Young Man with Feather Biretta and Hauberk

around 1645 | Reynier van Gherwen

Full of pride, the young man poses, his left arm firmly placed on his hips, his right arm leaning on a regimental staff. His gleaming hauberk (gorget) reveals a narrow strip of lace collar. A gold chain and black sash complete his appearance. Gherwen was presumably a pupil of Rembrandt’s around 1640/45. The composition and the method of painting bear witness to the influence of the Rembrandtesque style of the 1640s.
