St. Jerome, one of the four Latin Fathers of the Church and a cardinal, has withdrawn to a life of solitude in order to translate the Bible. An angel appears, bringing him divine inspiration: the old ascetic listens to the message with rapt attention. The lion lying at his feet refuses to leave him because the saint once pulled a thorn from its paw.
