Interior of the Jesuit Church in Antwerp

The painting depicts the interior of Antwerp’s Jesuit Church, which was richly decorated with precious materials. Rubens supplied a large number of paintings for the church, among them two that were displayed alternately on the high altar. Here we see his “Miracles of St. Ignatius of Loyola”. In the right aisle is the entrance to the Chapel of St. Mary with a section of Rubens’s “Assumption”. It, like the two high-altar paintings, has been in the possession of the former imperial collection in Vienna since 1776.
