Two-seater travelling-litter
1st half of the 19th century
Until the middle of the 19th century litters were popular as safe vehicles, particularly for mountainous routes. They were carried by two horses or mules harnessed between the long carrying shafts. The green-painted two-seater litter from the Vienna court shown here was used on longer journeys and is accordingly comfortably equipped. For the night it could be arranged so that it was possible to lie down and in the back seat there is a built-in toilet. (MKR)
