Handdecken wurden über das gesattelte Pferd gelegt, wenn es nicht geritten, sondern von einem Stallknecht an der Hand geführt wurde. So wurden Sattel und Geschirr vor Staub oder Regen geschützt. Die hier gezeigte Satteldecke des Wiener Hofes ist ein besonders prächtiges Exemplar aus rotem Samt mit reichster Silberstickerei. (MKR)
