Two-Handled Vase

1st half 13th c. (cutting); mid-18th c. (mounting)

This vase, which weighs almost thirteen kilograms and holds some nine litres, was cut from a single piece of rock crystal. It is thus the largest extant medieval vessel of its kind. It was first mentioned in the 1598 estate inventory of King Philip II of Spain. There, its monetary value was estimated to be several times higher than that of paintings by Titian, then already a highly famed artist.
