Tobias Heals His Blind Father

ca. 1620 | Gérard Douffet

Over the course of the 17th century, the Old Testament narrative of the healing of the pious old man Tobit by his son became a popular subject for paintings. The archangel Raphael, here artistically portrayed at the left edge of the painting, gave Tobias the instructions to apply a fish’s gall to the eyes of his blind father to heal him (Tobit 11:11). The Flemish painter Gérard Douffet, to whom this painting is attributed, spent the years between 1620 and 1622 in Rome, where he was in contact with the circle surrounding Valentin, Manfredi, and Tournier.
