Martha Rebuking Her Sister Mary Magdalene
around 1621 | Simon Vouet
Mary Magdalene, the beautiful sinner of Christian tradition, is depicted at her toilette across from her puritanical sister Martha. With eloquent gestures Martha appeals to her to turn away from earthly things. The picture is from the painter’s Roman period, in which oriented himself on Caravaggio. He was later court painter to Louis XIII of France.
