Christ and the Disciples in Emmaus

before 1614 or around 1621 | Michelangelo Merisi, gen. Caravaggio

After his resurrection, Christ appeared to two disciples on the road to Emmaus. The portrait shows the scene where Jesus breaks the bread at the meal, as he did at the Last Supper, and thereby reveals his identity. The picture is the mirror image of a composition by Caravaggio (London, National Gallery) dating from around 1600. The artist, possibly Genoan, was influenced by Dutch successors to Caravaggio (mainly Hendrick Terbrugghen).
