The Lamentation of Christ

around 1513–1520 | Giovan Gerolamo Savoldo

Belonging to the earliest preserved works of Savoldo, this tableau was probably created for the church of Santa Maria dell‘Orto in Venice. Throughout his life Savoldo investigated the most diverse optical phenomena and was considered the “philosopher” among painters. His efforts to isolate individual observations from nature in order to experiment with them in his painting can be seen here in details such as the greygreen, distorted face of Christ or the hand with the stigmata on it extended as it were to the viewer.
