A Philosopher

around 1520/30 | Giovan Gerolamo Savoldo

With a melancholic expression, this barely identifiable man with a scroll seeks out contact with the viewer. The tight cropping links up well with the dramatic lighting: while the head only dimly stands out from the gloom of the priming coat, the light “dances” on the green of the robe. Fragments of the artist’s signature on the scroll hint at a self-portrait.
