The Entombment

This picture is possibly a study for the altarpiece that Jacopo Bassano painted in 1574 for the church of Santa Maria in Vanzo in Padua. Probably under the influence of similar late works by Tintoretto, the painter made this biblical scene a “night piece”. The seemingly sketchy, vibrant brushwork is in keeping with the visionary, intangible quality of the painting. The mystic atmosphere of the lighting is especially characteristic of the final phase of Bassano’s work.
