Tamar Being Taken Out to be Burnt

The widowed daughter-in-law of Judah, Tamar, tries to force her father-in-law to comply with Jewish law and give her his youngest as her husband (Genesis 38). When he refuses, she covers her face and waits for him in an open place, where he believes her to be a harlot. As a pledge she receives his signet ring, bracelets and staff and then sleeps with him, becoming pregnant. She is later condemned to be burnt for her transgression, but when she reveals the pledge, Judah frees her.
