The Dream of Dido

In his Aeneid Virgil recounts the story of Queen Dido seeing the shadow of her dead husband, Sychaeus, in a dream, after her brother, Pygmalion, had killed him out of greed. Sychaeus warns Dido to flee to Libya, pointing with his arm towards a waiting ship. The picture was formerly owned by Prince Eugene of Savoy and probably served as a sopraporta in one of the state rooms of his winter palace in Vienna.
